In the metal forming world, spinning is a rare blend of art and science. The process requires an artist to move spinning metal on a lathe affixed to a tool or spin chuck through a series of what we call passes. This is done with the sole intention of producing a shape or skin that duplicates the form of the spin chuck itself. These forming passes are produced with a variety of tools, ranging from lever style rollers and egg tools to stick type hand tools. The process, when seen by outsiders, has been likened to forming pottery sideways. The spinner must stretch material by moving metal outward and back-spinning to hold thickness. The process allows for our specialist to hold tight tolerance wall thickness and produce one piece parts with superior inside and outside surface finishes in shapes and sizes that cannot be drawn.
